NBN Network Maintenance – Do you comply with UNIFY?

As the Build of the NBN Network reaches its final stages, focus is now turning to the Network Maintenance stage.  This project will be called NBN UNIFY.

The Delivery partners who are fortunate to win this new contract will engage with its Contractors to find and fix faults on the network quickly and accurately.  These faults could be on the Fibre, Copper or COAX sections of the Network.

The Contractors that are engaged to carry out this work will have to demonstrate the skills to find and fix the faults in the time allocated by the NBN.  Contractors will also need to demonstrate the use of good quality test equipment with up to date calibrations.

For example; on the Fibre Network, Fibre Scopes with all appropriate tips will need to be used.  How would it be possible to determine if a fibre connector is contaminated otherwise.  A good quality OTDR, powerful enough to test through splitters is also a must.  This is not possible if the OTDR has a low dynamic range or a contaminated port.

In short, any poor work practices that may have taken place on the Build of the Network will not be tolerated moving forward.  The use of low standard or poorly maintained test equipment will no longer be acceptable.
