VIAVI MTS 4000v2: MPO OTDR, Enterprise SLM
Learn how to set-up and test multi-fiber singlemode MPO cables in automated mode with VIAVI MTS-4000 V2 & MTS-4000 MPO Switch module.
Enterprise-SLM software application allows defining the number of fiber to test in each MPO cable (8, 12 or others) as well as the label scheme to easily document all the tested fibers. Enterprise-SLM will also control the optical switch to test all fibers in a MPO cable after one-button press. It reduces the test time by 50% compared to manual mode.

How to find Fibre Faults like a Pro
Once a fibre run is completed the last thing you want is to find problems with a splice or a connector as it means you will need to hunt down the problem and repair it before submitting the trace. Even worse if you have to go back to an old job to find a problem. This is usually time consuming and costs you money.
Using Smart Access Anywhere with your Viavi OTDR will speed up the time it takes to locate and fix bad splice joints or multi port connections on the NBN Network. This is available with all new Viavi OTDR’s purchased from TMG or as an upgrade Licence if you have a JDSU / Viavi OTDR already.

Using Smart OTDR on the Viavi MTS2K and MTS4k
In this short video, I will demonstrate how to use the Smart OTDR function which comes as standard on the Viavi MTS 2000 and MTS 4000. This function allows the user to set up the OTDR for NBN work by simply selecting the length of the fibre under test and selecting LFN or DFN. This eliminate the OTDR’s being incorrectly set up. The config files are configured to the latest NBN Optical Testing Standard v9 1 Mar 2019. Please feel free to contact TMG for more details 1800 680 680.

OTDR Best Testing Practices
Use of Launch Cables
A launch cable consists of a spools of fibre with a specific distance, and should be connected between the OTDR and fibre link under test in order to qualify the front end connectors.
The length of the launch cable depends on the link being tested, but it’s generally between 150 m and 1000 m for single-mode and multimode testing.
The fibre length highly depends on the OTDR attenuation dead zone, which is function of the pulsewidth. The larger the pulsewidth, the longer the launch cable required.
PROACTIVE Connector Inspection
A single dirty fibre connection can affect overall signal performance. Proactively inspecting each fibre connection with a fibre microscope probe will significantly reduce network downtime and troubleshooting. Always follow this simple “Inspect Before You Connect” process to ensure fibre end faces are clean prior to mating connectors.
A dirty OTDR port or a dirty launch/receive cable connector will impact the OTDR measurement. It needs to be inspected and cleaned before the launch cable is connected.
Important Technical Tip - Saves Money!
OTDR & PON Meter Connector Port Savers
OTDR port repairs and repolishing are cost you money and your business unnecessary and costly downtime.
A Fibre Connector Port Saver is an ultra-high premium grade (almost) 0dB attenuator, and used as a sacrifical adapter.
Rather than damage your OTDR port, use these low-cost, easy user and field-replaceable Connector Port Savers
….saves you money and downtime
