In May, the major telco became the first of its kind to launch G.fast in Australia, overtaking NBN Co as a leader in the FTTC (Fibre to the Curb) space and announcing plans to ramp up its G.fast roll-out.

TPG Telecom group executive wholesale, enterprise and government, Jonathan Rutherford has said the company will soon be providing G.fast technology to premises, in almost every state and territory of Australia.

“We think the launch of G.Fast is a game-changer for our wholesale business and customers,” he said.

“G.Fast is just the beginning of our infrastructure investment for FTTB premises. We have plans to upgrade our footprint in South Australia and Western Australia, which will take us to more than 2,500 buildings over the next year.”

With great power comes great responsibility – while G.fast implementation can reuse pre-existing copper or coax infrastructure from distribution point units (DPUs) to the user end point, such infrastructure must be completely free from faults to facilitate such high frequency signals.

The other restraint on G.fast technology is it is most applicable in ultra-dense urban zones where local loops (the physical link that connects customers’ premises to the telco’s network) measure less than 500 metres.

As TPG switches on its G.fast network – with a 15% discount on offer for those that sign up before May 2023 – it is integral to have local loops checked for faults before banking on those ultra-fast speeds.
