Cable and Antenna Analysers

Whether you need to verify cable & antenna systems, test distributed radios with RF and fibre feed lines, or validate DAS deployments, VIAVI’s CellAdvisor Cable and Antenna Analysers provide integrated solutions for; Line sweep measurement, RF & Optical Power Measurements, and Fibre end-face inspection, in a lightweight, Cloud-Enabled instrument ideal for cell site installation.

Why do technicians need to test the Cable Antenna System at Installation?

Over 70% of the problems in cell-sites are related to cable and antenna systems.    RF Signal reflections on the feed-line reduces cell coverage.  Reflections are often caused by loose connectors, dented or damaged cables and/or defective or incorrectly connected antennas.

The most efficient time to resolve these potential Cable Antenna System issues is prior to turn up/commisioning of the new site on the network or whilst conduct site upgrades

The particular key measurements to detect these issues within the Cable Antenna System are; Return Loss (VSWR) to measure signal reflections, Cable Loss & Insertion Loss and Distance to Fault (DTF)

Fibre Testing

Fibre testing is critical today for nearly every type of network.  Proficiency is required by fibre optic installers, contractors, project managers, technicians and engineers that need to understand, apply, and correctly measure and record the performance of fibre infrastructures.

Primary Areas of Fibre Testing

Fibre Connector End-Face Inspection
Optical Link Loss Testing
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
Optical DWDM Channel Checker
Fibre Connector End-Face Inspection

Contamination is the #1 cause of major problems in fibre networks.  When two fibres are mated together, a key requirement is to ensure light passes from fibre to fibre without excessive loss or back reflections.

What remains challenging is maintaining a pristine end face. A single particle mated into the core of a fiber can cause significant insertion loss, back reflection, and even equipment damage.

VIAVI’s range of Inspection Microscopes are designed specifically for fibre optics connector end-face inspection and use precise connector adapters to perform automated fibre end-face examination to IEC standards to determine a PASS or FAIL.

Following Inspect Before You Connect procedures and utlising Fibre End-Face Microscopes allows field staff dramatically reduce issues in the optical link.  Telecommunication carriers in Australia, including Telstra, Optus and NBN following and mandate fibre end-face inspection on any works carried out on the fibre infrastructure.

  • User selectable graphical or tabular display modes
  • Save results via internal memory or external USB memory stick
OTDRs - Optical Time Domain Reflectometers

OTDRs are used to characterise optical links.  They show a graphical perspective of the fibre trace signature and assist in determining link quality.   OTDRs will detect and locate anomallies in the fibre indentifying faults due to connector contamination, breaks, bends, kinks and excessive splice loss.

Not all technicians are fibre or OTDR experts, the solution has to be easy to set up with simple results interpretation.
VIAVI’s range of OTDRs ensures technicians test with consistency using the right test setup/configuration.

Antenna Alignment & Monitoring

When installing and maintaining antennas and microwave systems its important to ensure the antennas are correctly align to ensure you have the optimum alignment and maximised data throughput.

3Z Telecom (a VIAVI company) specialise in antenna alignment tools, and it’s latest solution, the RF Vision is 30% smaller than their previous model and 3 times more powerful.

The 3Z RF Vision using dual frequency GNSS technology will determine where you are located and once you enter in what you want as your target azimuth it will auto calculate and orientate you to align to your desired target azimuth and voila within minutes you will be pointing where you need to be pointing at.

The best part of it all, you can save your results and generate a single comprehensive PDF report with line-of-sight images for each antenna being aligned.  It is possible that you perfectly align your antenna but not achieve its coverage objective.  Line-of-sight reports allow RF Engineers to identify obstacles that may impact customer satisfaction.

This tool also gives you true north readings so you dont have to worry about adding or subtracting declinations as it changes each and every year.  Nor do you have to worry about working with a compass as it can give you inaccurate readings when used near any sources of magnetic field interface.

The 3Z RF Vision will save your tower crews a considerate amount of time when aligning their antennas or point to point microwave dishes.

With its Compact size, Rugged Design (strengthened polycarbonate hard plastic, protective rubber bumpes and Impact Resistant Display), User friendly GUI, Unique reporting capabilities, RF Vision Mobile App (Andriod & Apple), and Integrated Camera, 3Z RF Vision has paved the future for antenna alignment.

Antenna Alignment Monitoring Sensor
VIAVI/3Z IoA - IoT for Antenna

Get notified whenever any of the antennas you are monitoring get misaligned!

The new IoA IoT for Antennas makes it incredibly easy to monitor antenna alignment in 3 dimensions:
Azimuth, Down-Tilt and Roll

Simply attach it to the antenna and it will automatically detect and report alignment changes in real time via the LTE CAT-M1/NB-IoT Network.

From the Field to Your Desk IoA is Alarm Capable

Each antenna can be individually identified on a tower or throughout the entire network. Via our robust remote monitoring software, a network operator has the ability to set thresholds for changes in azimuth, tilt and roll.

When these thresholds are exceeded, an alarm will be generated and the operator will be notified immediately.
If an undesired change occurs, an operator can act quickly to restore communications to optimal performance.

Benefits:

  • Easy and Quick to Set Up
IoA’s installation is an easy attach-and-monitor process, designed with the technician in mind. An average 9-antenna site can be installed and operational in less than 30 minutes.
  • Quality Designed, Manufactured and Tested
Every IoA is designed to surpass performance standards required for wireless monitoring products. It has a battery lifetime of 5 + years and strictly enforces waterproof sealing standards IP67.
  • Long duration Battery Life – It has a battery lifetime of 5+ years
  • Fully Waterproof – Strictly enforces waterproof sealing standards IP67.
  • Technical Support – IoA comes with lifetime support, including training, software and field support.
Passive Intermodulation Testing

Passive Intermodulation (PIM) interference that falls in the receive band of a wireless system elevates the noise floor resulting in high dropped call rates, call blocking, slow data transmission speeds and decreased system capacity.

The PIM Analyser enables network operators to improve site performance by finding and eliminating sources of passive intermodulation at the cell site.

Ethernet, Timing & Synchronisation Testing

Whether service providers are deploying a new technology or launching a greenfield network, all components, connections, and the overall network integration needs to be tested.

After ensuring all physical layer tests are completed (fibre inspection and certification), it is important to run higher layer tests along with timing and sync to ensure the best return on investment.

Failure to test can cause network launch delays, poor 5G system performance, and excessive, unplanned capital expenditure.  Ultimately, neglecting to test can negatively affect the customer experience, cause end-user churn, and hurt the topline.

Timing & Synchronisation Testing

Timing and synchronization play a vital role in the performance of a wireless network.  In 5G networks, those requirements are magnified due to phase and timing demands brought by time division duplex (TDD) and coordinated radio techniques.

Previous mobile networks primarily required frequency synchronization to align signals. Unfortunately, frequency sync alone will not be enough with 5G
