WatchGas SST1E Xs Exotic Single Sensor Gas Detector. The new SST1E from WatchGas is a single-gas personal detector designed for industrial worker safety. One of the notable additions is support for the Xs gas sensor, which is intended for detecting certain organic gases and vapors that are difficult to monitor with traditional single-gas sensors.
What is the Xs Gas Sensor?
The Xs sensor is a high-stability broad-band sensor for certain organic gases and vapors.
Unlike a dedicated sensor that measures only one gas (such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, or chlorine), the Xs sensor is a broad-spectrum toxic vapor sensor. It is intended to provide an early warning when workers are exposed to a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or solvent vapors.
The Xs sensor is capable of monitoring gas concentrations from 0 to 100 ppm, providing precise readings with 0.5 ppm resolution. To help protect workers in the field, the SST1E triggers alarms at 25 ppm and 50 ppm, offering clear warning points before exposure levels become more serious.
Why Use an Xs Sensor Instead of a Specific Gas Sensor?
A conventional single-gas detector is highly selective:
- CO sensor → Carbon monoxide only
- H₂S sensor → Hydrogen sulfide only
- Cl₂ sensor → Chlorine only
The Xs sensor is different because it acts more like a general toxic organic vapor monitor. This can be useful when workers may encounter multiple solvents or organic chemicals and it is impractical to carry a dedicated detector for each compound.
